Sunday, I was out of sorts the whole day, harsh to my kitchen crew and making stupid mistakes, like almost burning the scrambled tofu. Lance hadn’t come by Saturday night—he’d barely had enough time to grab a cup of coffee when he made his delivery. His mother needed help with the food for the party and last-minute cleaning.
What would it be like to be that close to one’s parents? To be twenty-two and still living at home? By choice? To be out and still be welcome around the whole family? I had a feeling his family might not be quite so cool with him seeing an older, tattooed hippy freak. But the fact that he assumed they would be cool with it, that he trusted they would accept whoever he wanted to bring to dinner? That was a bit staggering.
And I’d turned him down, so I had no reason to be dwelling on it. No reason to be feeling all melancholy. No reason at all to be missing something I hadn’t wanted any part of. We weren’t dating. We weren’t lovers. We weren’t falling for each other. This wasn’t a fairy tale. We were just two dudes who happened to mesh really well together, getting our rocks off.
Finally, around nine, I couldn’t stand it anymore. We hadn’t gone twenty-four hours without a text in weeks, but I hadn’t heard from him since he’d dropped off the rolls on Saturday afternoon.
I gave up and got my phone out. Looked at it. Put it away. Fed my fish. Checked the water. Cleaned the filters. Stared at the tank, but that didn’t have its usual hypnotic effect on me. In the big tank, my large red comet fish was doing his thing of ramming the two small Calico Moors I’d added a few months before. He was in a cranky mood, too. I briefly considered toking, but even that didn’t hold any appeal for me. It would just make me hornier and more alone.
I pulled my phone back out. No new messages. Fine. You win. I thumbed to Lance’s quick dial—yeah, he had a shortcut on my phone. No, that didn’t mean we were dating.
HOW WAS THE PARTY? I texted. There. No my-bed-is-so-lonely texts. Ten minutes went by and I flipped on a movie I knew I wouldn’t really watch. Then my phone buzzed with a call.
“Hey, I saw your text,” Lance said. “Party was good. Lots of people. Tons of leftovers. But there’s no school tomorrow and Mom is letting Trinity and the twins have a bunch of the cousins stay for a sleepover.”
“Total Degrassi circus?” I settled back into the couch, putting my feet up. Just hearing his voice calmed me down, more even than a joint.
“You have no idea. If I have to kick another twelve-year-old out of the basement, I’m going to punch something. I’ve got two huge tests Tuesday.”
“Pack up your stuff. It’s nice and quiet here.” Understatement.
“I might. I took off work tomorrow so I could study, but that’s not happening with the tween explosion here.
